TrackOne does not provide the ability to fully impersonate another user, however there are two common ways to see what that user sees by using the Gateways or by logging in as that user.
This document covers two ways of doing this:
- Portal Impersonation: view the Student or Parent Gateway as a chosen student or parent while logged in as yourself. No changes are made to the student or parent account.
- Overriding a User Account: temporarily change a user's password and override network authentication so you can log in as them directly, bypassing Single Sign On (SSO).
Please use extreme caution with this second option, you are logged in as the real user and anything you do here would be as if that user were actually logged in and performing those same actions, it is not a demo.
Portal Impersonation (Demo Student / Parent Code)
- Select Administration from the top of the left-hand task panel.
- Select Configuration, then Portals.
- Select the Portal Impersonation tab.
- Tick Enable demonstration mode for demonstration user.
- Set the Demonstration User Name to your own TrackOne username. i.e. BuddP.
Only the user entered here will see the demo student or parent. All other users are not affected. - Enter the code of the student or parent you would like to view:
- Demo student code: a valid student code, to view the Student Gateway as that student.
- Demo parent code: a valid parent code, to view the Parent Gateway as that parent.
- Demo teacher code: a valid teacher SIS code, to view the Teacher Gateway as that teacher.
- Save.
- Ensure you have given yourself the appropriate Student Gateway and/or Parent Gateway menu permissions, then log out and log back in as yourself.
- Open the Student Gateway or Parent Gateway menu. The pages will now display the data for the demo student or parent you entered.
Note that you will still be using your own permissions, not the student's or parent's. To check exactly what a student or parent can access, use the Overriding a User Account steps below.
Turning Off Portal Impersonation
- Once you have finished, return to Administration > Configuration > Portals > Portal Impersonation.
- Untick Enable demonstration mode for demonstration user and select Save Configuration.
Overriding a User Account (Bypass SSO)
Prior to making any temporary changes to a user account, we would recommend ensuring that the user has completely signed out of the application until testing has concluded.
- Select Administration from the top of the left.
- Select User Management, then Users.
- Select the user type (Staff, Students, Parents) from the blue bar at the top, then click the edit icon on the far right-hand side of the user you would like to log in as.
- Prior to making any changes, make a note of the account's current details in case you need to reverse changes at the end. There is no automatic revert or undo.
- Select the edit icon to the right-hand side of Password and enter a new temporary password.
Make note of the Username and Password.
Tick the Override Network Authentication box.
This allows the user to log in with a TrackOne username and password instead of being sent to your school's SSO provider. If this box is not ticked, you will not be able to log in to the account.
Click Update User Details.
You can now login with the details you've just set.
Add ?AttemptSSO=False to the end of your url to tell TrackOne to skip the SSO login screen and take you to the Forms login page.
Consider using Incognito or your browser's equivalent to separate this login session from your actual account's session. You will now see the Suite exactly as that user does, using their permissions.
Reversing the Account Override
- Once your testing has concluded, log out and log back in with your own account. Return to User Management > Users, search for the user and click the edit icon.
- Untick Override Network Authentication and select Update User Details.
